What Is a Human Design Profile?
Your Human Design profile is one of the most revealing aspects of your chart. It consists of two numbers separated by a slash — for example, 3/5 or 4/6 — and describes your life role, learning style, and the way you interact with the world.
The profile numbers come from the I Ching hexagram lines (1 through 6) and are determined by the positions of your conscious Sun (Personality) and unconscious Sun (Design).
The 6 Lines and Their Themes
Before exploring the 12 profiles, it helps to understand the six underlying lines:
- Line 1 — Investigator: Needs a solid foundation; learns through research and study
- Line 2 — Hermit: Natural talent that emerges when called; needs alone time to recharge
- Line 3 — Martyr: Learns through trial and error; bonds and breaks create wisdom
- Line 4 — Opportunist: Builds through relationships and networks; fixed foundation matters
- Line 5 — Heretic: Seen as a problem-solver; carries practical wisdom for others
- Line 6 — Role Model: Three-phase life; becomes a living example after age 50

How to Work With Your Profile
Your profile is not something to overcome — it's your natural way of navigating life. A 1/3 profile doesn't need to stop experimenting; a 2/4 doesn't need to force themselves into the spotlight.
The key is to honor your profile's natural rhythm:
- If you're a Line 1 or 4, invest in building your foundation and network
- If you're a Line 2 or 5, allow yourself time alone and trust that others will call you forward
- If you're a Line 3 or 6, embrace your experiential learning without judging the "failures"
